We are justifiably proud to present the largest battery in the Netherlands! We’re in the implementation phase of our second large-scale energy project: Project Castor. This battery system, boasting 30 megawatts of power and 63 megawatt-hours of capacity, will be the largest battery project in the Netherlands and one of the largest in Northwest West Europe on its commissioning in autumn 2023.

All about Project Castor

Overcoming the volatility of sustainable energy portfolios

The 30 MW/63 MWh battery system will be used in the long term to overcome the volatility of sustainable energy portfolios. This will contribute to more rapid integration of sustainable energy into the Dutch electricity market. As the supply and installation partner, Rolls-Royce is building the system in the North Sea Port energy hub in Vlissingen-Oost, with direct connection to the Stedin grid. Project Castor is being made possible jointly by Triodos Bank and Nationaal Groenfonds as financing partners.

Dennis Schiricke,
CEO, SemperPower

“We’re extremely proud of this fantastic result! This is an important milestone in the development of our second large-scale battery project, actually the largest in the Netherlands at this time. SemperPower is using this project to underscore its development capabilities, and together with our project partners we’re playing an important role in accelerating the energy transition."

Andreas Görtz,
President Sustainable Power Solutions,
Rolls-Royce Power Systems

“With our new large-scale battery storage systems which support the integration of renewable energy sources in the supply of electricity, we are taking a new step with our customers towards net zero emissions of greenhouse gases. We are very much looking forward to working on this together with SemperPower.”

Remko de Bie,
Senior Account Manager Energy and Climate,
Triodos Bank

"Energy storage is a link that cannot be omitted if optimum use is to be made of wind and solar, and stability is to be maintained in the electricity grid. Not only does it prevent waste, it also means that polluting gas and coal power stations need to generate less if there’s a shortfall in electricity. Triodos Bank intends to accelerate the energy transition by giving impetus to energy storage. Our financing, along with Nationaal Groenfonds, of SemperPower strengthens our ambition to lead the field in this new market.”

Emile Peters,
Investment Manager,
Nationaal Groenfonds

“Sustainable energy storage systems are relatively new. This causes many financiers to steer clear because they cannot assess the risks properly. Nationaal Groenfonds, together now with Triodos Bank, is actually happy to finance frontrunners like SemperPower so that they can accelerate the energy transition.”

Our ode to the stars

“The centre of our universe is the sun. It brings us day and night, heat and cold, and thanks to this star there is life on Earth. We are at a point of no return at which renewable energy sources are essential. Our analogy is an ode to all the stars in our universe. All this is to show the urgency and magnitude of the energy transition; storage is the key.”
