First twins in large-scale
Press release
With due pride, SemperPower announces that it is entering the implementation phase of its third large-scale energy storage project: Project Pollux. This battery system, with a capacity of 30 megawatts and an energy storage capacity of 68 megawatt-hours, will, upon commissioning in the autumn of 2023, become the largest operational battery energy storage project in the Netherlands, and also one of the largest in Northwest Europe. Together with our project partners, we are accelerating the Dutch energy transition.
Project Pollux
- A battery system with a 30 megawatt capacity and an energy storage capacity of 68 megawatt-hours;
- Located directly next to its twin project, Castor, in the heart of the energy hub in Vlissingen-Oost;
- With Alfen as the supply and installation partner;
- Financed by Triodos Bank, a.s.r., and sustainable investment fund manager Meewind;
- Aimed at promoting the integration of renewable energy and supporting the sustainable portfolio of Essent.
Together with our project partners, we are entering the implementation phase, followed by the operational phase later this year. Essent will use the 30 MW/68 MWh battery system long-term to mitigate the volatility of its renewable energy portfolio. This will contribute to a faster integration of renewable energy into the Dutch electricity market. Alfen will serve as the supply and installation partner to build the system on the site of North Sea Port in the energy hub in Vlissingen-Oost, next to its twin project, Castor. The battery system will be directly connected to the Stedin network. The project is made possible with financing from Triodos Bank, a.s.r., and sustainable investment fund manager Meewind as financial partners.
SemperPower. Game changer in energy storage.
SemperPower develops, finances and operates large-scale energy storage systems and jointly with its partners aims to accelerate the energy transition. With the increasing generation of sustainable energy, balancing supply and demand in the electricity market is a growing challenge. SemperPower’s battery energy storage systems can store sustainable energy at times of over-supply, releasing it again at times when the market so demands. It additionally offers energy traders and energy companies the opportunity to support and further expand their sustainable portfolio.
SemperPower is justifiable proud to be the largest developer of independent large-scale energy storage in the Netherlands, with aBESS portfolio of 70MW / 141MWh in total.
